Food Box Sixteen
I was so happy to see everyone so happy with their food boxes last week! We love hearing people talk about the flavour and quality of our products. And we agree! Local food tastes better! There are a number of reasons for this, one of which comes down to the varieties of produce we can grow as local producers. If a farmer is planning to sell their crop to grocery stores across the continent, they might choose to grow varieties for qualities like uniformity and shelf life. Us farmers who mostly sell their produce directly to consumers don’t necessarily need to worry as much about shelf life (after all, all of the vegetables you will be receiving tomorrow were harvested today and yesterday!). Instead, we get to choose varieties based on factors like flavour, beauty, abundance, and diversity. This explains why you might find a purple bean amongst your yellow beans, and why Bonnie’s tomatoes taste so much better than what you find in the store!
THIS WEEK’S FOOD BOX:
- Sweet corn
- Potatoes
- Tomatoes
- Onions or lettuce head (most will get onions)
- Sweet peppers or yellow beans
Extra product for the family box is delicata squash and swiss chard.
The meat CSA this week is sausages, stir fry strips, stewing beef, and small pork chops.
