Food Box Twelve

We are so grateful for the rain we got this week, and ready for some more! This has definitely been a challenging growing season for farmers across the province (hopefully things shift, and we have a beautiful balanced fall ahead of us!). During extreme conditions like this, everything struggles a little, but some things struggle more than others. 🙂 This will be a tough year for anyone whose agricultural products depend on hay or grain, for example. Carrots do best with lots of water, and cucumbers don’t tend to like the heat. But, some things do better in hot and dry conditions (supplemented by irrigation). Beets, beans, and tomatoes tend to struggle with fungal issues, so are happy when there is less water on their leaves. Diversifying and growing a lot of different things is one way that we build resilience on our farms – and it’s fun for the customers too!

THIS WEEK’S FOOD BOX:

  • Wild blueberries
  • Yellow beans
  • Tomatoes
  • Fresh onions
  • Lettuce mix or swiss chard or beets

Extra product for the family box is carrots and a beefsteak tomato or jalapeno peppers.

The Meat CSA this week is steaks! Either prime rib steaks or T-bone steaks.
